What you need to play
A paddle, a ball, court shoes, protective eye wear, and some friends
Pickleball Paddle
A good paddle will help but you are the biggest factor in how well you play. So be smart about your paddle selection. The biggest things that will affect your choice are:
- Weight
- Handle length
- Sweet spot
- Surface
- and possibly, the Construction
If you are brand new to Pickleball I’d suggest buying an inexpensive paddle, under $100. If you are planning to move up take advantage of stores that have demo programs.
If you plan on playing in tournaments make sure your paddle is USPA approved.

Pickleball Ball
There are two types of Pickleballs, indoor and outdoor. The difference between them is the size and number of holes. Outdoor Pickleballs have a more smaller holes than outdoor balls and they are also a bit thicker and heavier, which makes them less susceptible to the wind.
Balls come in a variety of colours, yellow, green, orange/red, and blue. The colour of the ball is not an indication of how soft or hard, or whether it is an indoor or outdoor ball. It can make a difference as to how well some people can see the ball.
Balls from different manufacturers have slightly different characteristics and you may develop a preference even the differences are minor.
As with paddles you should buy balls that are USPA approved.

Protective Eyewear
Highly recommended that you wear eye protection. My optometrist has seen two Pickleball eye injuries, one was a detached retina. Not the tale you want to tell your friends.
The game is quick, the ball is hard and the paddle is a lethal weapon. Safety glasses from your local hardware store will work.

Court shoes / Running shoes
I have seen people playing in hiking boots and play fairly well. Some courts, especially indoor courts will require that you wear non marking running shoes.
In any case it is advisable to wear proper shoes, a good comfortable curt shoe is best. It will provide the best footing and reduce the chance of injury from slipping.
Sport shoe manufacturers are making Pickleball shoes, check them out.
